NAIWBE Named to the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics’ Top Non-toxic Black-Owned Beauty Brands List

Jacksonville, Florida –10.18.2022 – NAIWBE has been named to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ (CSC) new List of Top Non-Toxic Black-Owned Beauty Brands. This list and database of products features U.S. companies led by Black entrepreneurs that are creating safer beauty products, free of toxic ingredients linked to health concerns that disproportionately impact Black women. These companies show an exemplary commitment to the health and safety of their patrons and lead the movement to address the injustice of Black beauty.

The 80 small and medium-sized businesses that made the list are raising the bar for ingredient safety and leading the movement to address the injustice of Black beauty. In order to make the list, each company must sell products that do not include any of the CSC Tier 1 “Do Not Use” Red List of Chemicals of Concern in cosmetics. The CSC Red List is made up of 480 ingredients used in beauty, personal care products, including fragrance ingredients.

The 700-plus products found in this first-ever searchable database were also vetted and verified for safety against the CSC Red List. This means each product was personally checked and found to be free of harmful chemicals linked to health concerns like cancer, diabetes, early puberty, endometriosis, infertility, maternal health, pregnancy complications, and uterine fibroids.

By eliminating chemicals negatively impacting Black women’s health, these companies have made a significant commitment to protecting their customers’ health and well-being. They are also helping to reduce the disproportionate toxic burden that Black women face from unsafe chemicals in the beauty and other consumer products they use, which can help prevent the development of chronic diseases like breast and ovarian cancer.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of our searchable database of non-toxic Black beauty products,” said Janet Nudelman, Director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a program of Breast Cancer Prevention Partners. “The companies we’re showcasing are makings safer Black beauty products that won’t harm the health of Black women and girls. We hope that more and more companies will follow their lead and help grow the clean Black beauty industry by selling non-toxic makeup and personal care products that Black women can trust.”

NAIWBE® is committed to developing, providing and maintaining the highest quality organic standards for responsible skin care products.

The Non-Toxic Black Beauty Project was guided by an Advisory Committee made up of leading non-profit organizations and scientists working to improve Black women’s health.

The project represents the first comprehensive effort to generate a list of chemicals of concern in Black beauty products that should be avoided by consumers, cosmetic manufacturers, and retailers.
