We suffer from dry skin issues for multiple reasons. Our skin is exposed to varying environmental elements year-round. The sun is a constant and provides sunlight all year long with UVB rays in the spring/summer months and UVA rays in the fall/winter.
Understanding UV Rays
UVB Rays: Responsible for sunburn and much stronger during the summer.
UVA Rays: Remain pretty constant all year long. They contribute significantly to both skin aging (including wrinkles and brown spots) and skin cancer. UVA rays also penetrate glass and clouds, which means they're streaming into your windowed office as well as your car.
An understanding of this helps protect your skin year-round. For example, while inside, avoid sitting too close to windows, adjust your blinds, and if possible, install a tint on the window. When outside, use an appropriate SPF for the amount of time you spend outdoors.
Preventing Negative Skin Conditions
Some of the factors mentioned can cause negative skin conditions. That’s why it’s important to have proper skin maintenance. Incorporating a basic, easy-to-follow skincare routine with three main steps is essential for healthy skin. The three steps are: cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing. Use a cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin, an exfoliant that is non-abrasive while removing dead skin, and a moisturizer that heals, protects, and moisturizes the skin. The most important step in any routine is to remember to moisturize with an SPF of at least 15.
